About this data
The Secured Overnight Financing Rate and the effective federal funds rate, published daily by the New York Fed, via FRED.
What it measures
SOFR is the cost of borrowing cash overnight against Treasury securities; the effective federal funds rate is the median rate on unsecured overnight loans between banks. Both are published every business day by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
Why it matters
SOFR replaced LIBOR as the benchmark for trillions of dollars of loans and derivatives. When it rises above the Fed's target range, it signals that cash is getting scarce in the financial system, as happened in the September 2019 repo squeeze.
