About this data
The M2 money stock (cash, checking and savings deposits, small time deposits and retail money funds), seasonally adjusted, via FRED.
What it measures
The broad stock of money held by households and businesses: currency, checking and savings deposits, small time deposits and retail money market funds, from the Fed's H.6 release.
Why it matters
M2 surged by about 40% in 2020–21 with pandemic relief and Fed purchases, and then fell in absolute terms for the first time in decades. Its link to inflation is loose, but very fast growth or contraction is a sign that fiscal and monetary policy are pulling hard in one direction.
