Your 2027 tax brackets are about to move, and by more than last year

The IRS will soon publish its 2027 inflation adjustments. Hotter inflation points to a roughly 3.2% bump, but several of the 2025 law's headline breaks are fixed in dollars and will not grow at all.

$972 billion of room left: the debt limit returns in 2027
The $5 trillion increase enacted in July 2025 is mostly spent. Treasury's own data show under $1 trillion of headroom, which puts the next debt-limit standoff in the first months of a new Congress.

December 11: Congress bought time past the midterms. Now what?
The government runs on a 72-day stopgap that expires December 11. None of the 12 spending bills is law, the Senate has not reported one, and a lame-duck Congress will decide what happens next.

The $2 trillion year: what drove the FY2026 deficit
CBO's final monthly review puts the FY2026 deficit at $2.0 trillion, $218 billion above last year. Revenue grew, but interest, benefits and tariff refunds grew faster.

Trump Accounts hit 60 million kids, but the $1,000 must be claimed
Treasury says every eligible child now has a Trump Account. The catch: a parent has to claim it before anyone can contribute, and before the $1,000 federal seed for children born 2025 to 2028 is paid.
