About this data
Total assets of the Federal Reserve, from the weekly H.4.1 release, via FRED.
What it measures
Everything the Fed owns, mostly Treasury securities and mortgage-backed securities, reported every Thursday in the H.4.1 release.
Why it matters
The Fed expanded its balance sheet through "quantitative easing" in 2008 and 2020 to push down long-term rates, and shrinks it through "quantitative tightening" by letting bonds mature. The size of the balance sheet affects bank reserves, Treasury yields and how much of the federal debt private investors must absorb.
