About this data
The FOMC's target range for the federal funds rate, upper and lower limits, via the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (FRED).
What it measures
The range the Federal Open Market Committee sets for the overnight rate at which banks lend reserves to each other. It is the Fed's main policy lever and moves only at FOMC meetings, eight times a year, or in rare emergency actions.
Why it matters
Almost every other US interest rate takes its cue from it, from Treasury bills and credit cards to business loans. The diamonds on the chart show where the median Fed official expects the rate to be at the end of each year.
