About this data
The closing balance of the Treasury General Account at the Federal Reserve, from the Daily Treasury Statement. It falls as the government spends and rises with tax receipts and borrowing; around a debt limit it shows how much room is left.
What it measures
The government's checking account at the Federal Reserve, at the close of each business day.
Why it matters
When the debt limit binds, the Treasury runs this balance down to keep paying bills, and the "X-date" estimates follow it closely. When the Treasury rebuilds it by borrowing, cash is drained from the banking system.
