About this data
Quarterly growth of real gross domestic product at a seasonally adjusted annual rate, from BEA via FRED, with the Atlanta Fed's GDPNow estimate for the current quarter.
What it measures
How fast the US economy grew in a quarter, after adjusting for inflation, expressed as an annual rate. The first ("advance") estimate comes about a month after the quarter ends and is revised twice.
Why it matters
GDP is the broadest measure of economic activity. Two negative quarters are a common shorthand for recession, though the official call is made by the NBER using a wider set of data. The diamond shows the Atlanta Fed's GDPNow model estimate for the quarter not yet published; it is a nowcast, not an official forecast.
