About this data
Total nonfarm job openings, seasonally adjusted, from the BLS Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS), via FRED.
What it measures
The number of positions employers are actively trying to fill on the last business day of the month, from the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey.
Why it matters
Openings measure demand for workers. Comparing them with the number of unemployed shows how tight the labor market is; Fed officials watched the ratio closely as openings fell from their 2022 peak without a jump in unemployment.
