Projection
No statistical model we tested has beaten a simple no-change assumption on this series over the past 49 weeks of backtests, so gov.house does not publish a projection line here. What the history does tell us is how far the series usually moves:
| Over the next | Usual move (4 in 5 cases) | Range from today's 4.33 |
|---|---|---|
| 4 weeks | ±0.44 | 3.90 to 4.77 |
| 8 weeks | ±0.81 | 3.53 to 5.14 |
| 13 weeks | ±1.24 | 3.09 to 5.57 |
A statistical projection, not a prediction of policy and not investment advice. How the projections work.
About this data
Average US retail price of regular gasoline, all formulations, from the Energy Information Administration's weekly survey, via FRED.
What it measures
The average pump price for a gallon of regular gasoline across the United States, surveyed every Monday by the Energy Information Administration.
Why it matters
Gasoline is the price consumers notice most, and it drives short-run swings in headline inflation and in inflation expectations. Policy levers include the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the 18.4-cent federal gas tax and summer fuel-blend waivers.
