How the calculator works
It uses the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), not seasonally adjusted, published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, with monthly data back to January 1913. The value of an amount moves in proportion to the index: $100 × (CPI at the later date ÷ CPI at the earlier date). Choose a month for a precise comparison, or "Annual average" to compare whole years; for the current year, the average covers the months published so far.
The CPI tracks the average price of a broad basket of goods and services. Your own experience can differ: housing, medical care, tuition and food have each risen at different speeds. The index was not collected for October 2025 because of the federal funding lapse; that month is estimated from the months on either side.
